When you can’t achieve a simple human task there is a feeling of absolute failure. Advocacy as a solicitor was my passion; food was my guilty pleasure; having financial freedom gave me the ability to spend on friends and family which brought joy to me. I lost all of these which made me question my self-worth. I didn’t just dislike myself physically and mentally but I started to hate being me. I started to isolate myself and avoided friends and family (well I tried to at least but my family is like chewing gum at times). I felt self-worth and money go hand in hand and for a while, I did base my value on financial success.
“When you can’t achieve a simple human task like speaking there is a feeling of absolute failure”
I used to support an orphanage overseas and sponsor a couple of orphans abroad, but losing my financial independence meant I couldn’t do this as much. I felt more and more worthless every day. I spent months wallowing in self-pity and incapable of accomplishing anything again.
I tried going back to my career albeit in a different role that didn’t require my voice. It was soul-crushing as I felt there was a lot of pity and an awkward silence whenever I was in a group meeting.
After taking that leap of faith online I now feel “I have a voice because I have my own business”.
Starting my own online business was the best act of self-love for my mental health but also my financial independence. I want to encourage others to do the same. If I can do it so can you. Read below for my top 3 tips to start your own business from home.
“I have a voice because I started my own business from home”.
How to start your own business from home?
Every time I felt sad or low I always went back to praying and reminding myself that ‘everything happens for a reason and by the will of Almighty who has a plan for me’. I couldn’t therefore just crumble away lying in bed. I, therefore, started to do something about it and began researching. I googled the following and here I am today telling you how to start.
‘How to start your own business from home?’ ‘What kind of business can I start from home?’
When I realised the potential and possibilities, the decision-making became easier. To start an online business from home the first and most important step is to believe you can do it and go for it. A positive mindset was all that was required at this point.
3 TIPS FOR STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS
1. First Step: Write a Business Plan
Even if it’s just some simple goals initially. Preparing can avoid feelings of overwhelm. I did write a simple list of 5-year goals but my dear friend @nataliejamesmakeup on Instagram gave me a little hierarchy chart to structure my 5-year goals.
2. Do Business in Something You Enjoy/Are Passionate About
I had radiotherapy burns and peeling skin on my face and neck that required mild exfoliation with a cloth. Most of the Reusable cotton pads on the market had polyester mix and were not certified. I had become passionate about taking small steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle and I also love the concept of gifting. I, therefore, decided to source Reusable Cotton Pads as a Gift set; raw cotton used is GOT’s certified as organic and sustainable but also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified as free from harmful chemicals and safe for human use.
I suffered from lymphedema (water retention) post-surgery that required daily massage which helped me manage my symptoms. I wanted this to be enjoyable, relaxing, and therapeutic to promote sleep and natural wellbeing instead of the chore it had become. I did a lot of research about rose quartz; the characteristics, benefits, and buyer’s guide to the quality of rose quartz. I used the GIA and how to buy and sourced and put together my Gift Set of Two Rosebuds.
All the products I have chosen are sustainable, natural, plastic-free, and zero waste. Being conscious and caring towards the environment is healing and empowering.
3. Find someone willing to help you.
Sometimes investing in you by learning is the best act of self-care or self-love. I bought the Amazon Wizard’s Selling Course which gave me the initial know-how about starting my own business from home and of course selling on Amazon. It was expensive but paid for itself soon after I started; well worth it because it saved me from making fundamental costly mistakes.
The course consists of short videos that cover everything from opening a business account, registering a limited company, sourcing, marketing, and even branding and scaling outside of Amazon.
The course comes with a three month 1:1 membership which was invaluable. I could go back and forth with my coach with all my questions; he would check and review my product choice, my listing, and keywords, etc. I highly recommend this course if anyone is considering selling on Amazon on a professional level. I am now in a position to sell via my website and will also have a store on Amazon as a brand and not just a seller. I couldn’t have reached this position without this course.
My Amazon mentor was impressed with how far I’ve come and because I loved his course he offered me an affiliate link. I didn’t even know what affiliate meant two months ago but here I am with a link below if you are interested. I get a small commission at no cost to you if you purchase the course through this link.
Maybe I’ll write another blog on why you should consider Amazon as a selling platform.
When I finally had the support to manage stock-taking, packing, and shipping it was time to scale and start selling via my own website as well as Amazon. I couldn’t ignore Amazon because in 2020 statistics show 90% of online shoppers shop on Amazon. However, I am not one to place all my eggs in one basket. It’s necessary to have my own customer base and established brand presence aways from Amazon
Choosing the right e-commerce website provider was such a pain point. I knew my goals were ambitious and I had big dreams. I didn’t want to keep changing platforms and I wanted complete ownership of my website. WordPress was the right choice but the back end of the dashboard was the elephant I needed to learn how to ride.
I found a trusted WordPress developer called Eliza, on Fiverr who designed my website and supports me in managing it. It’s very affordable and she is brilliant to work with. I learn from her. I test and play around with the website design and even coding to learn and she is always there to fix things in case things go wrong.
If you ever need help with Website design on WordPress, Shopify, or Sales Funnels and Blogs I would highly recommend this girl (link below). She saved me a lot of money on hosting through her recommendation and even gave me a link to purchase which I was happy to use.

Mistakes and Failures?
It hasn’t been easy. I made a lot of mistakes along the way especially in pricing the products. I barely broke even in the first six months because the expenses of packing, shipping, storage, and marketing costs were much higher than my initial estimation. However, I do not consider these mistakes failures rather they are the stepping stones to my future success.
Starting my own business from home has been a rewarding and life-changing experience for me. I love finding different ways to improve my customer service and packaging in a plastic-free sustainable way. I write little notes for my customers and try to pack orders in a way I would like to receive them. I enjoy adding a little extra personal touch to orders. I think about it as a way of putting a smile on someone’s face. I can’t personalise orders via amazon, that is why I want to grow and scale my brand via my website, where I am in control of how orders are packaged.
I would say to anyone thinking about becoming self-employed; just take a leap of faith and go for it.
